What is Presidents’ Day?
Presidents' Day as a Washington's Birthday has a history as old as US country itself. It was started to celebrate publicly for the first time in the late 18th century, while George Washington was still president. Following the death of him in 1799, his birthday of February 22 became an important day of remembrance.
According to the Gregorian calendar which is most commonly used today, George Washington was born on February 22, 1732.
But according to the Julian or "Old Style" calendar his birth date was February 11th. Back in the 1790s, Americans were split that some of them were celebrated his birthday on February 11th and some of them on February 22nd.
Washington's Birthday firstly became official in 1885, when President Chester Arthur gave a signature to make it as a federal holiday. There was President Lincoln's birthday on February 12, although it didn't become a federal holiday it was also celebrated as a legal holiday in many states outside the old Confederacy.
George Washington was the first president of the United States of America. His first term as president was from 1789 to 1793 and his second term from 1793 to 1797. Before he became president, he played significant roles in the US military, leading the American Continental Army to victory over the British in 1783. Washington is often accepted as the father of the United States and is the globally best-known American politician ever.
The name and existence of George Washington have always been very important to United States. There is the portrait of him and three other American presidents carved into Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. His image is also used on the one-dollar bill and the quarter-dollar coin. The names of the capital of the United States, Washington D.C., Washington State and at least three universities came after his name.
The change from Washington’s Birthday to Presidents’ Day began in the late 1960s, when Congress proposed a measure known as the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Leaded by Senator Robert McClory of Illinois, this law offered to shift the celebration of several federal holidays from specific dates to a series of predetermined Mondays. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act included a provision to combine the celebration of Washington’s birthday with that of Abraham Lincoln, which fell on February 12. Lincoln’s Birthday had been celebrated as a state holiday in places like Illinois. Many people supported joining two days by considering it as a way of giving equal recognition to two of America’s most famous figures.
The date change from February 22 to third Monday of February made many citizens believe that the new date was intended to honor both Washington and Lincoln, as it now fell between their two birthdays. Then the marketers jumped at the opportunity to play up the three-day weekend with sales, and “Presidents’ Day” name were advertised at stores around the country. By the mid-1980s, Washington’s Birthday was already known to many Americans as Presidents’ Day. This shift was nearly completed in the early 2000s, so that half the 50 states had changed the holiday’s name to Presidents’ Day on their calendars. While some people had argued that changing holidays from their original dates would cheapen their meaning and reduced its importance, the bill also had wide support from both the private sector and labor unions and was seen as a way to strengthen retail sales.
Presidents’ Day is traditionally viewed as a time of patriotic celebration and remembrance like Independence Day. As time passed by, this holiday gained special meaning especially during the difficulties of the Great Depression. At that hard times, portraits of George Washington were often seen the front pages of newspapers and magazines every February 22.
