December is the last month of the year for both Gregorian and Julian calendars. In northern hemisphere the season is winter and southern hemisphere the season is summer. It has length of 31 days. Many countries begin celebrating for new year in the last day of December. First day of this month is recognized World Aids Days since 1988. It is dedicated to raising awareness in spite of the spread of HIV and its disease. 

In the time of the Roman Empire, Santa Barbara, who had escaped from his father's wrath, took refuge in a cave near the Izmit miners, was believed to protect the working miners and was therefore cherished by miners, settled down in this cave on December 4, is celebrated as "World Miners Day" in the world.

The UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ’on 10 December 1948 and was published in the Official Gazette on 27 May 1949. The World Human Rights Day began to be celebrated on 10 December, the day when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The General Assembly of the United Nations invited all state and non-governmental organizations was decided to be accepted as "World Human Rights Day". Human rights are the rights that individuals gain from being mere human beings. It is based on the principle of protecting human beings against exploitation, oppression, slaughter and all kinds of natural power. In 1992, the United Nations decided to celebrate December 3 as the International Day of Persons with disabilities and it is celebrated every year by the member countries with various activities. In addition, the United Nations member states have a disability week celebrated on May 10-16.
